Another Reason to Hire a Good Attorney the First Time

A recent news article points out a big problem for people who get convicted of crimes, even misdemeanors. The article features a young man who could not get a job at the garden center at a Lowe’s because of the ACCUSATION of a misdemeanor many years ago. The charge againt him was dismissed, but the misdemeanor charge still haunts him even though he was never convicted. Companies like Lowe’s use screening companies to do criminal background checks on applicants and if something shows up the applicant is out of luck. From the article:

Sixty-five million Americans—or one in four adults—have a criminal record. But employers—including major companies like Bank of America, Omni Hotel, and Domino’s Pizza—routinely post job ads on Craigslist that explicitly exclude such applicants, according to a new report conducted by the National Employment Law Center (NELP), a labor-affiliated advocacy group.

So, you can’t even get a job at Domino’s with a record, apparently. A Kansas DUI charge is a misdemeanor, even the first time. If you get convicted of that DUI in Kansas (which means you plead guilty or get found guilty) there is a mandatory minimum 48 hours of incarceration, but you will also have a conviction on your record. A Kansas DUI cannot be expunged, and Kansas DUI convictions last for life. So, if you are convicted of a Kansas DUI, you will have a misdemeanor conviction on your record for the rest of your life.

This underscores the necessity of finding the best Kansas DUI lawyer that you possibly can any time that you are accused of a DUI. Many people accused of a first-time DUI think it is not a big deal. The first conviction is the one to avoid if you can, as well as any subsequent convictions. There is no such thing as a simple DUI. Even the first one requires the skill and experience of a DUI lawyer. Future employability may hinge on it.
