Overland Park Checklane

The Overland Park Police, in conjuntion with other agencies, ran a DUI checklane on April 18, 2008. 466 vehicles were stopped and 11 people were arrested for DUI. That is about 2.4%. That means 455 vehicles were stopped and delayed for no reason. Interestingly, 35 people were tested for DUI. That means that 24 people were pulled out of their vehicles, subjected to field sobriety tests, and found to be sober and safe to drive. That is over a 68% mistake rate based on the officer’s first impressions of the drivers. So for the people that the officers pulled out of their cars, they were wrong more than twice as often as they were right based on the indicators like the “odor of alcohol”, “bloodshot eyes” and “slurred speech” they always claim to note when a driver is still in the car. The story about the checklane is here.
