I can’t resist mentioning that a recent DUI checklane in Shawnee County, aka our state capital of Topeka, was an excellent example of what is so wrong with these DUI roadblocks. The story is here. So, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department got a grant to set up a DUI checklane and pay officers overtime to work it. They stopped all of the cars driving northbound on some road in Topeka, no doubt an area described in the grant application as being “known for drunk drivers”. For all of this effort, all of the money spent, all of the innocent people delayed for no reason, they netted ONE DUI arrest. One lone person. Of course, that person is innocent until proven guilty and may very well beat the charge, or have it dismissed for lack of evidence. But, even if a conviction is ultimately obtained, you can’t tell me that it takes all of that manpower, money and public display of power to find one DUI on a Friday night in Topeka, Kansas. How many officers were being paid overtime to be at this checklane? 20? 30? I don’t have the time, but someone should find out how many officers were there, how much taxpayer money was spent on the checklane, and what the ultimate disposition of the one arrested person’s case is. I will bet that the answers to these questions would be pretty interesting.
